Read-it-later service Pocket leaps to the Mac App Store

Pocket for Mac made its debut in Mac App Store Thursday morning, the first desktop offering from the former “Read it Later” service that lets users save articles, photos, and videos for later viewing.

Like its precedessor app for iOS, Pocket for Mac view that saved content either in stripped-down, Readability-style fashion, or in its original web view. Users can delete the articles or archive them, tag them with keywords, or star them as “favorites.”

Unlike the iPad version of the iOS app, however, Pocket for Mac users can only view their stored content in a list format: The picture-filled grid that makes the tablet app so attractive—and which is also available at Pocket’s website—isn’t available as an option in the desktop app. The desktop app does have a singular advantage over the website, though, in that it makes the content available for offline viewing.

Pocket for Mac is free, and compatible with computers running OS X 10.7 or later.
