Apple's fix for Do Not Disturb 2013 woes: Wait until Jan 7

Many iOS device owners rang in the new year quietly—since Do Not Disturb didn’t seem to work properly on the first day of 2013. Or the second, for that matter. Apple now has posted the “fix”—which is, essentially, wait until January 7, 2013.

Introduced with iOS 6, and promoted with a new television ad Apple unveiled to kick off the new year, the Do Not Disturb feature in iOS 6 mutes push notifications when your iPhone or iPad are asleep, preventing not just the sounds of those alerts, but the lighting up of the screens, too. And Do Not Disturb lets you schedule specific windows during which you’d prefer for your iOS devices to stay quiet.

But starting on the first day of 2013, Do Not Disturb offered iOS users even less disturbance than those users might desire: For many, Do Not Disturb failed to switch off at the scheduled end time. Apple says that the fix is to wait until January 7, 2013—or manually turn Do Not Disturb on and off. To do so, visit the Settings app, find Do Not Disturb, and tap to switch the slider.
