Jony Ive talks Apple's exploration of fashion and technology

Ahead of the Apple-sponsored 2016 Met Gala, Apple design guru Jony Ive, who is co-chair for the event, sat down with The Wall Street Journal alongside Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour to discuss the venture and the intersection of fashion and technology. Particularly, Ive had some comments on how development of the Apple Watch has pushed the company more towards carefully considering the union of fashion and technology:

"As products become more personal, something that is worn on the wrist put us in the space of fashion," said Mr. Ive. He and Ms. Wintour were wearing versions of the Apple Watch Hermès, introduced this month.

"These are issues close to our hearts," said Mr. Ive of the intertwining of fashion and technology. "Our understanding will temper and define future products we're working on. We're only starting."

Ive went on to explain that he still uses a pencil and paper every day to sketch out new ideas, using technology to enhance the process of exploring his ideas.

In a separate interview with Mashable, Ive expanded further by citing form versus function and the emotional connection we create with beautiful products:

"What I've noticed is if something works but emotionally you don't feel a connection — it's ugly — you'll use it, but you'll use it begrudgingly and you'll change at the first opportunity and you'll build no relationship with the brand or the people behind it. And so you really have to be successful in both."

"We make tools not necessarily to be bought by corporations, but generally we make things for people and the individual. And they become very personal," Ive said. "We make tools that enable important things to be made."

The 2016 Met Gala, titled "Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology," is set to take place on May 2, 2016 in New York. The show will "explore the full spectrum of processes by which clothing is designed and made," which seems a good fit for Apple considering its recent efforts to market the Apple Watch as a fashion accessory.

Sources: The Wall Street Journal, Mashable
