OS X development for the Oculus Rift VR headset is currently on hold

The company behind the upcoming Oculus Rift virtual reality headset has put its OS X development plans on hold for the time being.

[/url]

The consumer version of the Oculus Rift (http://www.connectedly.com/oculus-rift) virtual reality headset will need a PC to run, but it won't be one that will use OS X (http://www.imore.com/os-x) or Linux, at least for now. Oculus VR revealed today that it has put development for both of those operating systems on hold. Here is what the company said in today's blog post (https://www.oculus.com/blog/powering-the-rift/):

Our development for OS X and Linux has been paused in order to focus on delivering a high quality consumer-level VR experience at launch across hardware, software, and content on Windows. We want to get back to development for OS X and Linux but we don't have a timeline.

The consumer version of the Oculus Rift headset will go on sale in the first quarter of 2016 (http://www.connectedly.com/oculus-rift-consumer-vr-headset-will-launch-q1-2016-pre-orders-2015). Pre-orders will begin later in 2015 but a specific price has not yet been revealed. The company did reveal the hardware specs needed to use the Oculus Rift on a Windows PC (http://www.connectedly.com/oculus-rift-vr-headset-will-require-use-high-end-windows-pc), and as expected, that rig will need some high-end components inside.

Source: Oculus VR (https://www.oculus.com/blog/powering-the-rift/)
