tvOS 9.1 update is here for Apple TV

Apple on Tuesday released tvOS 9.1, an operating system update for the fourth-generation Apple TV (http://www.macworld.com/article/3000302/home-players/apple-tv-review-big-steps-forward-but-not-a-revolution.html).

The tvOS 9.1 update includes the ability to search Apple Music via Siri, compatibility with Appleā€™s Remote app on iOS, bug fixes, and performance improvements.

To update the Apple TV, open the Settings app. Then select System > Software Update > Update Software > Download and Install.

Why this matters: This is a pretty huge update, and both key features were sorely needed. We complained the loudest (http://www.macworld.com/article/3004948/home-players/i-want-my-apple-tv-app.html) about the lack of Remote app support, since using the software keyboard on the iPhone to enter usernames, passwords, and search terms is about a zillion times easier than hunting-and-pecking a letter at a time with the Siri Remote (http://www.macworld.com/article/3000918/home-players/tips-and-tricks-for-the-new-apple-tvs-siri-remote.html) (or even with the old remote (http://www.macworld.com/article/3007808/home-players/how-to-use-grid-style-password-entry-on-the-new-apple-tv.html), to be honest). The lack of Siri support (http://www.macworld.com/article/3006922/streaming-services/apple-music-on-apple-tv-why-siri-support-cant-come-soon-enough.html) for Apple Music on the Apple TV was confusing too, since it works so well on iOS (http://www.macworld.com/article/2977642/ios-apps/everything-siri-can-do-for-you-in-apple-music.html). Apple had promised to get it working in early 2016 (http://www.macworld.com/article/2998963/home-players/siri-search-coming-to-apple-music-on-the-apple-tv-early-next-year.html), so we're glad the company beat its own estimate. Both of these additions make the Apple TV easier to recommend as a holiday gift.

To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here[/url]
