Apple has agreed to pay $24.9 million to settle a four-year-old Siri patent lawsuit. In 2012, Dallas-based Dynamic Advances filed charges saying that Apple violated a patent owned by the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, to which it was the exclusive licensee. Apple decided to settle a month before the case was meant to go on trial. Under the agreement, Apple will pay $5 million initially to Dynamic Advances' parent company Marathon Patent Group after it relinquishes the case, following up with $19.9 million in due course of time. The settlements gives Apple a licence to the patent, with the guarantee that no further lawsuits will be brought forth on the same patent for the next three years. Rensselaer's patent in question is titled "Natural language interface using constrained intermediate dictionary of results," and it deals with processing natural language input queries. ...
