How to optimize storage on your Mac without macOS Sierra

Are you running out of storage and don't want to wait for macOS Sierra to optimize your space? Don't worry! There's a solution!

With macOS Sierra, Apple has made it much easier to find old documents and data and clear them off of our hard drives thanks to Optimized Storage. Sierra, though, won't be shipping until the fall. So, what if you don't want to wait that long to clean up your Mac? Easy, you can start right now!

How to check the storage space on your Mac

If you are unsure of how much free storage you have, you can quickly check the status of your internal and external hard drives.

Click on your desktop to select Finder.
Click on the Apple Menu icon in the upper left corner of the screen.
Select About This Mac.


Select the Storage tab.


The Storage status separates your files into categories as follows: Apps, Movies, Photos, Audio, Backups, and Other.

If there is a lot of space being taken up by the "Other" category, you can find and remove those files, too.
