With the new T2 chip in the 2018 MacBook Pro and the iMac Pro (https://9to5mac.com/2018/07/16/2018-macbook-pro-teardown/), Apple is preventing third-party Mac repairs. As detailed by MacRumors (https://www.macrumors.com/2018/10/04/t2-macs-must-pass-diagnostics-for-certain-repairs/) and Motherboard (https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/yw9qk7/macbook-pro-software-locks-prevent-independent-repair), new software locks have been put in place that make the machines “inoperable” unless Apple’s proprietary System Configuration software is run after a repair.
