Comparing Apple’s latest App Store changes in the EU to Google’s Play Store guidelines

Last week, Apple announced (https://9to5mac.com/2024/08/08/apple-app-store-eu-link-out-changes/) changes to its compliance strategy with the Digital Markets Act in the European Union. These changes apply to apps that link to a web page and include a new fee structure centered around the Initial Acquisition Fee and the Store Services Fee.

As it turns out, Apple’s changes to its guidelines (https://developer.apple.com/support/alternative-payment-options-on-the-app-store-in-the-eu/) around linking out in the EU are quite similar to Google’s Play Store policies (https://support.google.com/googleplay/android-developer/answer/14372887#zippy=%2Ccan-developers-utilize-external-offers-for-users-in-other-geographies-beyond-the-eea%2Cfor-which-type-of-products-can-i-offer-the-external-offers-program%2Care-game-developers-eligible-for-this-program%2Cwhich-countries-make-up-the-european-economic-area-eea%2Care-all-developers-required-to-enroll-in-the-external-offers-program%2Ccan-i-use-google-plays-billing-system-alongside-external-offers%2Chow-do-the-different-service-fees-apply-if-im-offering-google-plays-billing-system-and-also-participating-in-the-external-offers-program) in the EU – but with a few key differences. Here’s how the two arrangements stack up.
