Apple Movin’ On Up to 56th in Fortune 500 Rankings

They may not be moving into a “dee-luxe apartment in the sky,” but Apple keeps movin’ on up the Fortune 500 ranks.MacRumors is reporting that Fortune magazine has released its list of Fortune 500 companies for 2010, and Apple, Inc. moved from 71st place last year to 56th this year. The popular list ranks the world’s largest companies according to revenue, and Apple’s approximately $36.5 billion in 2009 revenue was enough to place the company even one spot ahead of Disney -- the entertainment giant who counts Apple CEO Steve Jobs as its largest individual shareholder.Even looking strictly at profits, Apple’s $5.7 billion in 2009 ranks the company 26th on that scale. Apple even charts several other times, including the Computers and Office Equipment category, where they rank third behind Hewlett-Packard and Dell by revenue. The company also racked up high scores in other categories, such as taking the top spot in shareholder returns over the past five years with an average return of 45.6 percent. The top dog in this year’s Fortune 500 list is retail behemoth Wal-Mart, who actually dethroned Exxon Mobil from their lofty throne. The two companies have flip-flopped in the top spot almost every year since Exxon Mobil took the top spot away from General Motors back in 2001.
