India Is Setting up an IMEI Database to Block Stolen and Lost Phones from Cellular Networks

India’s Telecom ministry is working on a Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) which will have access to a database of International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers. The new mechanism is expected to discourage mobile theft cases in India and also help trace the stolen devices with relative ease.
