Apple eyeing 'large expanses of real estate' for its self-driving car project

Apple, Google, and established car makers are eyeing up "large expanses of real estate" in the San Francisco Bay Area for their autonomous car projects, according to a Wall Street Journal report. Apple is said to be interested in an 800,000 sq. ft. property for its electric car initiative.



In a quarterly investor call, Victor Coleman, chief executive of Hudson Pacific Properties, said:


  We're seeing the Toyotas of the world, the Teslas of the world, BMWs, Mercedes. Ford now is out in the marketplace looking for space. I haven't even mentioned the 400,000 square feet that Google's looking to take down and the 800,000 square feet that Apple's looking to take down for their autonomous cars as well.


Over the last few months, Apple leased or purchased several buildings that are likely being used for its car project. The company is estimated to have a team of 600 people working on developing autonomous car technologies.
