Expo Notes: Moxtra adds layers to interest-based social networking
If Pinterest led the way in letting users document and share their obsessions, Moxtra goes a step further, offering new layers of voice communication and annotation for deeper communication in a fuller context.
The company’s free app for iPhone and iPad launched in the App Store this week, and its developers were on hand at Macworld/iWorld this week to share it with the public. The app lets users collect photos, videos, and other documents into “binders,” and share those binders with targeted individuals (like a contractor, if you’re coming up with remodeling ideas) or larger groups with the same interests.
And users can add depth to those binders in several ways. Pictures can be annotated, or users can record voice noites that attach directly to the image files; they can also record a slideshow of sorts that lets the user comment on several images at once. If more communication is still needed, users can always set up a “Moxtra meet”—a live audio conference to directly discuss the ideas embedded in the images (only one of the users in a meet needs to be a Moxtra client; the other participant can join in over the web). It’s as if a social network were married to a corporate videoconferencing system, scaled down for individual use.
