Apple comments on YiSpecter malware

[/url]

Apple has provided the following statement to iMore in regards to the YiSpecter malware, which made headlines earlier today despite its incredibly minimal risk to any prudent iPhone or iPad owner.

"This issue only impacts users on older versions of iOS who have also downloaded malware from untrusted sources," an Apple spokesperson told iMore. "We addressed this specific issue in iOS 8.4 and we have also blocked the identified apps that distribute this malware. We encourage customers to stay current with the latest version of iOS for the latest security updates. We also encourage them to only download from trusted sources like the App Store and pay attention to any warnings as they download apps."

We'll do a full explainer, but it's about what anyone would expect: You'd have to be so desperate for a sketchy "video player" or other untrusted app download, that you not only ignore the protections built into iOS, but actively go out of your way to circumvent them.

Update to iOS 9, which greatly strengthens to the Enterprise certificate trust system, and don't download untrusted apps from illegitimate sources in China, and you'll be just fine.

Once again, the bigger threat was the irresponsible headlines trying to get attention through scaring people.
