Earlier this year the FAA proposed new regulations to be put in place for these aircraft, and now the new rules are in effect. Under this statute, any aircraft weighing more than 0.55 pounds and less than 55 pounds, including the on-board cameras and other payloads must be registered. If you are purchasing a new unit, you'll need to register prior to your first flight, but existing owners will get a little bit of slack. Under this rule, owners who previously operated an unmanned aircraft exclusively as a model aircraft prior to December 21, 2015, must register no later than February 19, 2016. Owners of any other UAS purchased for use as a model aircraft after December 21, 2015 must register before the first flight outdoors.
