Intel rumored to cut thousands of jobs by end of 2016

Chip maker Intel could be getting ready to announce plans to lay off thousands of its workers. A new report says that the layoffs could affect its its employees until the end of 2016.





The Oregonian states:


  The cutbacks will reduce employment in some parts of the business by double-digit percentages, according to Intel insiders, amounting to thousands of job cuts across the company by the end of the year. The planned downsizing could begin soon after Intel reports its first-quarter financial results Tuesday, though sources say timing and specifics remain fluid.


The report speculates that the downturn in the PC industry might be part of the reason Intel could hold layoffs. Intel still gets the majority of its revenues from sales of its PC  chips. Research firms Gartner and IDC reported early this week that shipments of PCs continued to go down worldwide in the first quarter of 2016.
