Facebook Integration Coming to iPhone OS 4.0?

(Image courtesy of Engadget)If you love Facebook, there’s a chance that you may soon love iPhone OS 4.0, too -- it’s rumored to include some “tight integration” with the social networking hub.According to Engadget, new evidence has been unearthed from within iPhone OS 4.0 that reveals “low-level Facebook event and contacts integration” -- presumably meaning unified Calendar and Contacts apps, similar to what is already available with webOS and HTC Sense devices. It appears that Apple may have created “a separate type of contact just for Facebook” and Engadget points to some associated .plist files from a jailbroken iPhone running OS 4.0 “that seemingly back the claim.”Furthermore, there’s even mention of a generic “SocialKitInternal.framework” which sounds a lot like it might integrate with services such as Twitter, although the gadget site offers no other evidence for such claims. The new, presumably sociallly-aware iPhone OS 4.0 does include a “Linked Contacts” feature that AppleInsider turned up last week. Multiple Linked Contacts can now be associated to a single entry in the new iPhone OS 4.0 Contacts app, which we assume means those from Facebook and possibly other sites. If true, it would certainly be a better way to handle such contacts. Early webOS users, for instance, were dismayed to discover that Palm’s highly touted “Synergy” system combined their Facebook contacts with their regular address book. Given that the average Facebook user might have hundreds or even thousands of friends that they don’t necessarily want in their device’s address book and that it was an “all or nothing” kind of approach, we wouldn’t want to see a mess like that on our dear iPhones.
