Apple is giving its Mac operating system a major boost later this year. New features will include Siri support, Apple Pay on the web, Auto Unlock for Apple Watch, and more. Similar to the previous release of OS X El Capitan, if your Mac was built prior to 2012, you won't be able to take advantage of the Metal Graphics framework and many of the Continuity features, but the rest of macOS Sierra should be just fine.
