<p>Up until now, iOS devices have captured video in the MPEG-4/H.264 format, and still photos in JPEG. But with <a href="https://www.apple.com/ios/ios-11/" rel="nofollow">iOS 11[/url] (on recent hardware), Apple is breaking with tradition and switching to a new set of formats that promise dramatic decreases in file size—albeit at the cost of some added complexity in terms of file compatibility.</p><h2>iOS 11: HEVC and HEIF</h2>
<p>For video, Apple is using the High Efficiency Video Codec, or HEVC. This is the successor to the old video format—in fact, it’s technically H.265—and offers high-quality video at lower bit rates than H.264.
