Snapz Pro X updated with Mountain Lion compatibility, Retina support, and more
Ambrosia Software this week released Snapz Pro X 2.5.0, a significant update to its $69 Mac utility for snapping screenshots and screencasts. The company says that it rewrote Snapz Pro’s codebase to take advantage of the newest APIs available to developers in Lion and Mountain Lion. The update is free for owners of Snapz Pro X 2.0 or later.
Snapz Pro can take screenshots or screencasts of the entire screen, specific sections of the screen, or individual objects like windows. In the latest version of the software, several updates improve the process of snapping object screenshots: Windows are now saved complete with full transparency when appropriate, and you can optionally choose to include shadows with the objects you capture. The software is now also smart enough to grab a screenshot of a window in object mode—even if that window is occluded by other windows on the screen. As long as you can see one corner of the window you’re after, Snapz Pro gets the image you’re after.
Numerous updates address the screencasting functionality in Snapz Pro as well. Screencasts now work better with third-party video applications for later editing. Audio tracks—which can include the Mac’s native sounds along with a mic track—can be saved either individually or mixed down into a single track. And the scratch folder used during recording is now configurable, too.
While Snapz Pro X is a venerable screencasting app—indeed, the app existed before OS X did—it faces an increasing level of competition. Beyond OS X's built-in screenshot abilities, Apple includes two free apps with the operating system that rival some of Snapz Pro's functionality: There’s screenshot utility app Grab (in /Applications/Utilities), and even QuickTime Player, which can take screencasts as well. A growing collection of third-party apps also compete with Snapz Pro, like ScreenFlow, Screeny, and Screenium—all of which are (unlike Snapz Pro X) available on the Mac App Store.
