Sound works but no control over it?

Hey, I recently installed snow leopard ( I think ) to my dell studio 1537 laptop, all works perfectly except for the sounds control. When I play something it will play full volume and I have no control over being able to change this. When I go into sounds preferences it lists the sounds device but below it, it says "No sounds control" I've tried installing various kexts to no avail. Anyone know a solution to this, or have fixed this problem on a studio 1537 before? Thanks!
