Mac Gems: Push to Talk creates a mute switch for your Mac's mic

Editor’s note: The following review is part of Macworld’s GemFest 2013. Every day (except Sunday) from mid-July until late September, the Macworld staff will use the Mac Gems blog to briefly cover a standout free or low-cost program. You can view a list of this year’s apps, updated daily, on our handy GemFest page, and you can visit the Mac Gems homepage for past Mac Gems reviews.

Push to Talk serves as a “cough switch” for your Mac.

The idea is simple. When engaged in an audio chat over Skype or FaceTime there will be times when you wish to quickly mute your microphone—when you need to sneeze or the kids charge into the room. Push to Talk allows you to do this by assigning a key that either you press to engage the microphone (like a walkie-talkie) or toggle the microphone on and off.

It works well with the Mac’s built-in microphone but, regrettably, not with external USB mics.
