One of those places is in making and taking phone calls on your Mac, a feature of Continuity. All you've got to do is enable it and you're good to go!

Continuity is the word Apple uses to describe this blurring of the lines between devices. If you have an iPhone running iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite installed on your Mac, you can make and take phone calls as long as they're on the same Wi-Fi network.

The secret to the feature — the thread that binds them both together — is FaceTime. FaceTime sports the preference that both the Mac and the iPhone need in order to get this to work.

How to enable calling on the Mac

Double-click on the FaceTime icon in your Mac's dock — if you don't have one, just search for it via Spotlight Search instead.

Click on FaceTime in the top menu.

Click on Preferences...

Make sure the box labeled iPhone Cellular Calls is checked.

How to enable Continuity Calling on your iPhone

Tap on Settings.

Tap on FaceTime.

Make sure iPhone Cellular Calls is turned On.

Bear in mind that neither the FaceTime app on the phone nor the one on the Mac actually need to be active or running to enable your Mac to make and take calls. It's just that the preferences to manage this feature are kept within FaceTime settings. So you can safely exit out of FaceTime on the Mac and still expect it to work.

Both the Mac and the iPhone will need to be signed into the same iCloud account in order for this to work, and on the same Wi-Fi network as well.

When you receive an incoming call, you'll see something that looks like this:

And when you want to make calls, simply open Contacts and move your cursor over the number you want to call. A blue phone icon should appear to the right of it — click the icon to initiate a call.

That's all there is to it. If you try to make a call and get a message that says your iPhone isn't set up to allow calls, check the FaceTime settings on the iPhone to make sure that the iPhone Cellular Calls preference is on.

Enjoy! Now you can make and take calls on your Mac without having to scramble to find your phone. So if it's somewhere else charging, or if you forgot it in your jacket or backpack, as long as you've got your Mac handy, it's no problem!

Have any questions? Run into problems? Let me know in the comments!
