Apple's Greg Joswiak: Apple SIM not coming to iPhone

The quietly introduced Apple SIM feature alongside the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 debuts caused a sensation on how Apple may be able to once again transform the wireless and mobile industry with one SIM card to potentially rule all carriers. At this time, it seems that the Apple SIM would be an iPad-only feature and Apple VP of iPhone, iPod, and iOS product marketing Greg Joswiak tells the audience at the Code Conference to not expect it for the iPhone.

The premise of the singular Apple SIM card is that customers would be able to easily sign up for plans and switch carriers at will. Joswiak says that the feature creates a better customer experience for tablets as Apple sells more iPads through its own channels than at carrier locations.

It's about the customer experience. We ultimately don't know who you are going to use as the carrier, [
and] we want to make it as easy as possible.

Why it isn't headed to the iPhone? Joswiak says iPhone models are sold at carrier locations, and customers likely won't be headed to a Verizon store and ask them to activate AT&T service there.

I don't think you're going to go to the Verizon store and say, 'Can you hook me up with AT&T?,'

The Apple SIM idea still has some catches at this time. AT&T says that once you activate the Apple SIM with them, the SIM card would be locked to AT&T and you can't use the same SIM card to switch to a competing carrier. Verizon Wireless still isn't supporting the Apple SIM in the U.S. at this time.

Source: Fierce Wireless
