How to add or change your Mac's login password

[/url]

It's important to change passwords on a regular basis.

If it's been a while—or ever—since you've changed your password on your Mac, now's the time! And consider this a gentle admonishment to remind you that if your computer lives in a public building (say, an office) or a laptop that you tote around, you should frequently do this. Always try to stay at least one step ahead of people who might do you or your data harm.

Remember, your Mac password can be entirely distinct from your Apple ID password; the password you might need to check e-mail; or any other password. It only has to be the password that provides you with login access to your Mac itself.

Generally speaking, it's a good idea to have separate passwords for your Mac, email, Apple ID, and so on: Having separate passwords for each service you use means that even if someone gains access to one of your accounts, you're not giving them a skeleton key that unlocks every door in your online kingdom.

It's also important to use strong passwords — passwords that aren't easily guessed. Stay away from your kids' or pets' names, or simple passwords like "password123." And if you'd like some help managing your passwords, consider using a password manager like 1Password.

How to add or change your Mac password

Open System Preferences.

Click on Users & Groups.

Using your iCloud password is convenient—it's one less password to remember—but it's a bit more risky, because if someone gets access to your iCloud password, they'll be able to get access to your Mac too. (I keep my login and iCloud passwords separate, for what it's worth.) If you wish to do so, click Use iCloud Password... If you'd prefer a separate password, click Change Password...

If you need help generating a new password, click on the key icon to the right of the password field. OS X's Password Assistant app will help you generate one. Then hit the tab key again.

Verify your new password by typing it again, and then hit tab one more time.

If you wish to give yourself a hint, type it in the last field. Then click the Change Password button to save changes.
