As an enthusiastic evangelist for backups (http://www.macworld.com/article/2461362/drive-cloning-utilities-the-best-mac-apps-for-making-a-bootable-backup.html), I recommend and use online backup services—not exclusively, but as a simple way of maintaining secondary backups offsite that would still be available even if my Mac and backup drives were stolen or damaged. Among the many providers of online backups, I personally prefer CrashPlan. In fact, I liked it enough to write a book about it several years ago.

But increasingly, people have been asking me why I use CrashPlan (http://www.crashplan.com)—not in an “Oh, just wondering” way but in a “Seriously? You? Still?” way, as if it should be obvious to anyone that there are better choices out there. So I’d like to tell you why, and in the process offer comparisons to a few competing services: Backblaze (https://www.backblaze.com/), Carbonite (http://www.carbonite.com/online-backup/personal/how-it-works), DollyDrive (http://www.dollydrive.com/), and MozyHome (http://mozy.com/product/mozy/personal).

To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here[/url]
