Facebook puts a celebrity twist on live-streaming video

Facebook and Twitter have been swiping features from each other’s playbooks (http://www.techhive.com/article/2142563/meet-the-new-twitter-same-as-the-old-facebook.html) for years now, so it’s not too surprising that the world’s biggest social network saw Twitter’s live-streaming app Periscope (http://www.macworld.com/article/2902593/twitter-launches-periscope-a-meerkat-like-live-video-streaming-app.html) and thought, “Great idea! Let’s do that, too.”

Facebook’s live-streaming video feature isn’t as egalitarian as Periscope. The video tool is only offered inside Facebook’s Mentions app (http://www.techhive.com/article/2455465/facebook-has-a-new-app-but-it-s-for-vips-only.html), which you will never use because you probably aren’t considered an “influencer.” (Are you Facebook verified (http://www.techhive.com/article/2040248/facebook-starts-verifying-vips-unwashed-masses-need-not-apply-.html)? If not, you can’t use Mentions.) The app is designed for high-profile figures like politicians, actors, musicians, and athletes to share content with their fans, and now that content includes live videos (http://media.fb.com/2015/08/05/introducing-live-for-facebook-mentions/).

To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here[/url]
