Should the iPhone 7 be waterproof and, if so, how? Last spring Apple shipped the first Watch, which is officially water resistant and unofficially water proof for short depths and durations. Last fall Apple the iPhone 6s, which, completely unofficially, is resistant to splashes and even dunks. The iPhone 7, due this coming fall, is rumored to be officially "water proof". So, what does that mean? Water resistant vs. water proof The Apple Watch is technically water resistant rating of IPX7 under IEC standard 60529. That, according to Wikipedia, means: Immersion up to 1 m Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1 m of submersion). Test duration: 30 minutes Tested with the lowest point of the enclosure 1000 mm below the surface of the water, or the highest point 150 mm below the surface, whichever is deeper.
