Video: Apple’s New “What is iPad?” Ad Echos the Past

Apple continues the marketing assault for the iPad with a new 30-second commercial that’s just gone live on YouTube.Entitled “What is iPad?,” the new 30-second spot gives a rapid-fire look at how the iPad is being used while touting that “You already know how to use it.”MacRumors notes that the spot seems eerily familiar to something from Apple’s past: An original ad for the Newton from almost two decades ago, called “What is Newton?” The Newton, you’ll recall, was Apple’s much-maligned personal digital assistant (PDA) released in 1993 that could be viewed as a precursor to the iPad. The technology was axed by Steve Jobs when he returned to the company.Have a look at the new iPad spot embedded below and then the original “What is Newton?” ad and you be the judge!Oh, and the voice in the spot sounds a lot like Peter Coyote, an actor with a  huge list of credits to his name probably still best remembered as  the sympathetic agent “Keys” from 1982’s Steven Spielberg hit E.T.:  The Extra-Terrestrial.(Newton ad courtesy of MacRumors)
