Square Enix temporarily stops Mac sales of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

[/url]

Square Enix has temporarily paused sales of the Mac version of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. The director of the project cited various performance problems and a serious lack of communication with players as primary reasons for halting sales. The company will also be offering refunds for those that want them.

One of the primary issues was that incorrect system requirements for the game had been published prior to launch, which led to performance problems for customers trying to play it on machines that didn't meet the actual requirements. Several retailers also released the game early thanks to a miscommunication with Square Enix. This meant that the game shipped with a number of issues that would have already been fixed by the development team during a maintenance period prior to the planned launch of the game.

The game's producer and director Naoki Yoshida took to the Final Fantasy 14 forums to give a full explanation

Although our development and QA teams tested the client on Mac hardware, because of our last minute efforts to improve performance and the possibility that system requirements might change, we decided to prepare several versions of these requirements, with the one to be released depending on the final result. However, in the chaos leading up to the multi-platform launch of our expansion, we released incorrect requirements, which were not updated prior to the Mac version's official release.

Yoshida's explanation delves into the details of the company's Mac development policy for the game, the difference between Direct X and OpenGL, and more.

Source: Square Enix, via: Polygon
