shattered iPhone glass

Help.

I just dropped my iPhone flat on the screen and have shattered the glass.  I went to Apple to see if they would do anything for me (i know, what a dumbass to expect Stevie J. to consider the clumsy) and they informed that all they could do is replace the phone - for ?160!

Anyone have any ideas on how to get the glass replaced or a clever way to get Apple to replace for cheaper than the above pound of flesh?
