iPhone 6s may dramatically cut the number the number of chips that it uses, combining multiple components on fewer pieces of silicon. The iPhone 6s will also reportedly feature new NFC hardware, a brand new chip, as opposed to the iPhone 6, which uses a chip that first debuted in 2012.

On the chip reduction, the report from
9to5Mac states that fewer parts may result in a faster, yet more power-efficient device:

One section of the board that previously had in excess of 10 components has been pared down to 3 main chips, simultaneously cutting the number of parts and increasing the power efficiency of the ones that remain. Other necessary and remaining chips, such as the flash memory and CPU, notably benefit from smaller manufacturing processes that enable the iPhone 6S to offer the same or faster functionality with smaller, less power-hungry parts.

It also appears that a 16GB model of the next iPhone may be in use in testing, which could mean that Apple plans to stick with that as their base storage option. However, this model is reportedly only a prototype, and the final base storage may not be set.

The iPhone 6s is said to be
almost exactly identical to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus externally. This would be keeping with Apple's established pattern of a design revision, followed by an "S" model with upgraded internal components. The new phone is also reported to feature an
upgraded 12MP camera, and a
new LTE chip capable of speeds of up to 300Mbps.

Source:
