How to shoot Portrait mode photos at night or in low light

Get around Portrait mode's software limitations in the evening with some smart framing and lighting.

Apple's Portrait mode lets you shoot images with an enhanced depth of field and background blur, thanks to smart software tweaks and the iPhone 7 Plus' dual lens system. But it's not perfect — it can't officially shoot depth-of-field shots in low light, for one.

But here's a fun fact: You can trick your iPhone's sensors with just a little bit of light to force Portrait mode to fire. You'll get a grainier image than shooting in perfect lighting conditions, but in some cases, it might be artistically more pleasing than a fully lit photo.

Portrait mode engages when two factors are met: your subject is well-lit, and your iPhone is far enough back to allow both lenses to meter distance.
