iSequence Makes Beautiful Music on iPad

If there’s one type of app that could only be improved by the iPad’s larger screen, it’s the music sequencer -- especially one that looks so full-featured.Already a popular music creation app on the App Store based on user reviews, BeepStreet’s iSequence has made the jump to the iPad, completely rewritten with a new user interface to take advantage of more on-screen real estate. If you haven’t heard of iSequence before, the app is an intuitive eight-track music sequencer with a host of different instruments and even a flexible mixer with DSP effects. Professional musicians use sequencers to “record” their electronic performances, and iSequence appears to be full-featured enough to satisfy on-the-go pros as well as those who just want to dabble and record their goofing off for posterity.iSequence for iPad features 160 built-in instruments, ranging from acoustic to drum kits to pads, leads, sweeps and even ambient atmospheres, which BeepStreet claims are all “recorded with top classic and modern hardware synthesizers.” Best of all, you can buy additional instrument banks right from within the app’s BankShop. You can knock out your performance using either the adjustable piano keyboard or large drum pads from within iSequence, recording tracks and controlling movement in real time and then editing them later using the step sequencer and automation editor. “You can compose, jam and mix at the same time!” touts the app’s description. The step sequencer function of iSequencer offers a host of additional features. For instance, instruments are not bound to tracks, so you can play chords or use multiple instruments on a single track. Copy & paste, move and transpose selected areas or patterns, arrange pattern sequences to create a complete song and set note duration, panning, velocity and gliss. When your iSequence creation is finished, you can export the performance as HSQ, MIDI or even a WAV file, or copy your tracks to the audio clipboard. iSequence also imports HSQ songs, and promises much more to come.iSequence for iPad is a 144MB download from the App Store and costs only $6.99 until May 30th; after that, the introductory price goes away and you’ll have to pay the full $14.99, which still looks like a bargain based on the app’s feature set. Just don’t forget your friends at MacLife.com when you get discovered from those hot tunes you first dabbled with on iSequence, hmm-kay…?
