In Case You Missed It: May 17 - May 23
It was a slow week in big Mac news. The lull before the storm that is WWDC, no doubt. Google made a few waves, it's true, but they weren't very big ones. Facebook was Facebook, Twitter for iPhone finally came out...and, yeah. Like we said, nothing really earth shattering.Still, the week was not without its points of interest, small though they may be. For real. So let's take a peek under the covers and see what did and didn't change the world, at least according to Mac|Life.Features:- Every Facebook Privacy Feature Revealed and Explained - They're tricksy little buggers over there at Facebook, aren't they? Not only do they keep on changing their privacy policy, but they keep on changing the settings and tucking things away where they're harder and harder to find. But we're on the case, taking that social media machine apart, bit by bit. So unless you really want those tagged pictures of you drunk and pantless that your friends posted on their page to turn up in a Google search, we suggest you get reading.How-Tos:- Update an iWeb Site From Multiple Computers Using Dropbox - Is there anything Dropbox isn't good for? Outside of trying to upload your breakfast to it, we're still puzzling that one over. For instance, let's say you've uploaded your site, you've left the house, you're showing your friends, when you realize you've left a honkin' big typo in the headline. If you're OCD like some of us, there's just no way you can let that go. A stitch in time is definitely the way to go, and Dropbox is your sewing kit. - Ouch - Fixing a Busted MacBook Screen - Yes, Apple products are pricey, and Apple charges a mint to fix 'em too. But let's say, Butterfingers, that you don't feel like dropping down 800 big ones just because you dropped your MacBook. Is there a cheaper alternative? Absolutely. And whether you want to give it a go, or farm the job out to someone else, we know who you're gonna call (hint: not Ghostbusters).Reviews:- Chumby One - While there's all kinds of ports to turn iPhones and iPads into clock radios, we like this solution a little better. The oddly named, second Generation Chumby One is a nice solution to fun web doodads and such when you want some very basic content delivery. Nice new processor and the FM receiver is a decent add on, but the Chumby One sort of leaves us...a little meh, to be honest.- MaxJournal - With everything else moving digital, it was only a matter of time before private diaries and journals made the leap in a big way. Sure, you could always have kept a Word file of your personal triumphs and disasters, and for on the go, Notes could document those things you don't want to post on Facebook, but we want one solution that does it all. MaxJournal makes it easy, from the get-right-to-it simple interface, to password protection, to adding photos to a post.News:There were those who said the iPad would be a big flop and leave Steve with egg on his face. You don't hear much of that anymore, especially as Apple's suppliers can't keep up with iPad demand...in fact, demand is so high, Apple's even dropped their "no cash" policy, letting those without credit cards get some love...all of this is music to our ears, and if you want some more beautiful iPad music, why not check out Artikulator and make your own?...or why not hit the remix action because DJ Rana Sobhany is gonna hook you up with the apps that'll make it all flow... not flowing? Looks like Hulu Plus will be delayed and might not even make it to the iPad any time soon; now we've got frownies...on the other hand, here's someone who has reason to smile: AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega, who claims he's addicted to his iPad. Would that be Wi-Fi or 3G, Ralph? Inquiring minds want to know...and either model will look creepy/sweet with this smiling Joker decal polishing your iPad's Apple. Someone who did make news was Google this week who said if their AdMob deal doesn't go down, they're prepared for a fight with the government...but to take the sting out of their fists of fury, they updated their homepage with a playable PacMan game logo... the search giant also made some noise with their open source WebM video format, which they claim is lightweight enough for mobile devices...and as long as they were at it, Google's VP of Engineering decided to do a little Apple trash talking...Steve Jobs wasted no time firing back in an email, linking to a blog post that takes apart WebM's VP8 codec in favor of Apple's H.264...so what exactly is behind the x264 decoder that makes sense of Apple's format anyway? Let's all scratch our heads and ponder...meanwhile, another company Apple's been trading jabs with, Adobe, is prepping Dreamweaver for the inevitable HTML5 and CSS3, which is pretty much short for tiny violins playing over Flash's eventual grave...and for a little fun, why not take the names above and feed them into our handy-dandy Apple Mad Libs.
