The best MacBooks for students

<div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><p><a href='http://www.imore.com/best-macbooks-students' title="The best MacBooks for students"><img src='http://www.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/styles/large_wm_brw/public/field/image/2015/08/macbook-backpack-school-hero.jpg?itok=CDjYWApL' /></p> <p class="intro">Ready to pick up a new MacBook for the school year? Check out our guide to find the best one for you.</p> <p>It's back to school season, which means students will need a workstation that can power their research and assignments for a whole year. It's important to find the right fit for your academic needs; if you're in the field a lot, or bouncing between lectures, you'll want something light. If tuition is taking a big bite out of your bank account, budget will be determining which MacBook makes sense for you. Whatever your situation, we're hoping you can find something useful in here.</p> <ul class="cta large"><li>Check out more Apple gear that's perfect for back to school season!</li> </ul><!--break--><h2 data-title="Best MacBooks for school"></h2> <h2 data-title="Budget">For budget: Refurbished 13.3-inch MacBook Pro</h2> <p><a href='http://www.imore.com/best-macbooks-students' title="The best MacBooks for students"><img src='?itok=RmfKQ5Vu' /></p> <div class="buy-widget"> <p><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Apple-MD101LL-13-3-inch-Certified-Refurbished/dp/B00VQR7MVQ/?tag=creativelabsim-20&amp;m1k=cl_school&amp;mnsid=cl_school" title="" rel="nofollow"><img src="" /></p> <p><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Apple-MD101LL-13-3-inch-Certified-Refurbished/dp/B00VQR7MVQ/?tag=creativelabsim-20&amp;m1k=cl_school&amp;mnsid=cl_school" title="" rel="nofollow">$830 Buy</p> </div> <p>The cheapest MacBook we've been able to find is a 13.3-inch Certified Apple Refurbished MacBook Pro. You can always try your hand at getting a cheaper MacBook off Craigslist or eBay, but there's considerably more risk. The model here has enough horsepower at 2.5 GHz and 4 GB of RAM, and 500 GB storage should be enough to store all of your assignments. If you're upgrading, you can always save some cash by selling off your old Mac. This price may not stick around forever based on stock levels, but if you find a cheaper MacBook out there, leave a link in the comments!</p> <h2 data-title="Power">For power: 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro</h2> <p><a href='http://www.imore.com/best-macbooks-students' title="The best MacBooks for students"><img src='http://www.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/styles/large_wm_blw/public/field/image/2015/06/token-os-x-el-capitan.jpg?itok=8zqaNWeN' /></p> <div class="buy-widget"> <p><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Apple-MD101LL-13-3-inch-Certified-Refurbished/dp/B00VQR7MVQ/?tag=creativelabsim-20&amp;m1k=cl_school&amp;mnsid=cl_school" title="" rel="nofollow"><img src="" /></p> <p><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Apple-MD101LL-13-3-inch-Certified-Refurbished/dp/B00VQR7MVQ/?tag=creativelabsim-20&amp;m1k=cl_school&amp;mnsid=cl_school" title="" rel="nofollow">$2,500 Buy</p> </div> <p>If you want the absolute top of the line MacBook, the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display is a beast. It can be upgraded up to a 2.8 GHz quad-core processor, with 16 GB of RAM, and 1 TB of storage. Every input you could need is here, including Thunderbolt, HDMI, SD, and USB. Those specs, including screen size, can be pared down considerably, but even the 13.3-inch MacBook Pro starts at $1,300. On the upside, the smaller, cheaper MacBook Pro can be configured to have a slightly faster processor, if that's more important to you.</p> <h2 data-title="Value">For value: 13-inch MacBook Air</h2> <p><a href='http://www.imore.com/best-macbooks-students' title="The best MacBooks for students"><img src='http://www.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/styles/large/public/field/image/2013/11/macbook_air_hero.jpg?itok=lQ3V3zL9' /></p> <div class="buy-widget"> <p><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Apple-MacBook-MJVE2LL-Laptop-VERSION/dp/B00VJ1P7TS/?tag=creativelabsim-20&amp;m1k=cl_school&amp;mnsid=cl_school" title="" rel="nofollow"><img src="" /></p> <p><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Apple-MacBook-MJVE2LL-Laptop-VERSION/dp/B00VJ1P7TS/?tag=creativelabsim-20&amp;m1k=cl_school&amp;mnsid=cl_school" title="" rel="nofollow">$1,000 Buy</p> </div> <p>In terms of getting good bang for buck, it's hard to go wrong with the 13-inch MacBook Air. It offers an SD card slot and two standard-sized USB 3 inputs, 128 GB of storage, a dual-core 1.6 GHz i5 processor, and 4 GB of RAM. 12 hours of battery life and a super-slim profile make the MacBook Air perfect for carrying around and using all day long.</p> <h2 data-title="Portability">For portability: 2015 MacBook</h2> <p><a href='http://www.imore.com/best-macbooks-students' title="The best MacBooks for students"><img src='http://www.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/styles/large_wm_blw/public/field/image/2015/04/macbook-review-hero.jpg?itok=CeK6KyUF' /></p> <div class="buy-widget"> <p><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Apple-MacBook-MJY32LL-12-Inch-Display/dp/B00VSB0CB2/?tag=creativelabsim-20&amp;m1k=cl_school&amp;mnsid=cl_school" title="" rel="nofollow"><img src="" /></p> <p><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Apple-MacBook-MJY32LL-12-Inch-Display/dp/B00VSB0CB2/?tag=creativelabsim-20&amp;m1k=cl_school&amp;mnsid=cl_school" title="" rel="nofollow">$1,300 Buy</p> </div> <p>The new 2015 MacBook manages to be slimmer and lighter than the existing 11.6-inch MacBook Air (131 mm vs 170 mm, 2.03 pounds versus 2.38 pounds) yet offers more horsepower. Of course, you'll be paying a bit of a premium to get all of that in one package, but depending on how tightly packed your schedule is, it may be worth the investment. The MacBook has a 12-inch Retina display, 256 GB of storage, a 1.1 GHz Intel Core M processor, and 8 GB of RAM. The new MacBook does just about everything through its lone USB-C port, which may necessitate a slightly awkward adapter when transferring files, but it's safe to say this input is future-proof.</p> <ul><li>Read our in-depth 2015 MacBook review</li> </ul><h2 data-title="Back to school!">Your top MacBook for students?</h2> <p>Those are our top MacBooks for students heading back to school.
