i have a us bought 1.1.2 iphone recently unblocked. i am in france on the sfr network. i can not however get the safari and mail to work. each time a pop-up appears saying i need to subscribe to edge. can anyone please let me know how i can get this to work.

First you'll need to sign up for a data package (edge service) with your carrier.
Then, ask them the APN web address. Basically - it's the server that will allow you to use the edge network.
You might need a username and password, here in the States, T-Mobile does not require this info, our cell #s are our identification.
When you get the APN address, enter it under the following settings.
Settings >> General >> Network >> Edge
