What iPhone 6s storage size should you get: 16GB vs. 64GB vs. 128GB?

16 GB, 64 GB, or 128 GB, which iPhone 6s storage capacity is perfect for you?

If all you do is text, stream, and access web portals, you might be able to get by on 16 GB. If you shoot 4K video, download all your media, and want tons of apps, 128 GB might be the only option. If you do a lot of different things or are anywhere in the middle, choosing which iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus storage size to get can be one of the hardest decisions you make. That's why we're here to help!

Price per gigabyte breakdowns

Many products are segmented from entry level to standard to premium. Appliances, gadgets, even food brands. Entry level gets you in the door, standard is what most people end up buying, and premium is for those who want or need more. Apple could segment iPhones based on processor speed or color but they prefer storage size. It's easy for everyone to understand. More money buys you more storage.

Last year Apple kept the 16 GB iPhone, discontinued the 32 GB iPhone, and dropped the price of the 64 GB and 128 GB iPhones by $100. And that's where the product lineup remains today. Here's how that breaks down.

iPhone 6s, full price:

16GB: $649 or $40.56 per GB

64GB: $749 or $11.70 per GB

128GB: $849 or $6.63 per GB

iPhone 6s Plus, full price:

16GB: $749 or $46.81 per GB

64GB: $849 or $13.27 per GB

128GB: $949 or $7.41 per GB

So the lowest priced iPhones are just that, but the premium models give you the most gigabyte bang for your buck. But there's more to consider.

Local vs. Cloud storage

Apple's iCloud gives you free, unlimited storage for all your iTunes stuff. That includes iBooks, music, movies, TV shows, and apps. You also get 5 GB of additional storage for backups, data, and the new iCloud Photo Library and iCloud Music Library services that keep your personal pictures, videos, and Apple Music in the cloud. You can purchase more iCloud storage if you need it, and Apple has just dropped the prices on all the paid tiers:

5 GB - Free

50 GB - $0.99/month

200 GB - $2.99/month

1TB - $9.99/month

iCloud integrates with iOS and OS X, has an iCloud Drive app in iOS 9, and otherwise keeps all your stuff connected and collected. Thanks to some really intelligent nearline management, iCloud can help make sure you're recent and frequently accessed content is instantly available, and your older and infrequently accessed content is only a tap and a download away when you need it.

If you prefer other solutions, there's also built-in storage provider support for Dropbox, One Drive, Google Drive, and more.

The Cloud still can't take the place of lots of on-device storage—you can't shoot 4K video straight to the cloud, for example—but it can help you get the most of what you have.

Photos and videos

The iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus both have 12 megapixel cameras with up to 63 mp panoramas, 720p video at up to 240 fps, 1080p video at up to 60 fps, and 4K video at up to 120 fps.

That means it can eat through a ton of local storage, very quickly. iCloud Photo Library can help nearline a lot of that for you, but then you have to pay for iCloud Photo Library and depending how much you capture and how often, it still might not be ideal.

If you're big on photos or video, you'll want to go big on storage.

Media

iTunes movies can be 1 to 3GB in size for SD depending on the length. If you prefer watching HD, they can easily eat up 3 to 6GB in storage. TV shows can be a quarter to half the size of movies, but more than make up for it by the number of episodes typically available. Music files are generally quite small but can add up as well, especially if you have lots and lots of albums you want to keep with you everywhere. That will all push you towards 64 GB or 128 GB.

If, however, you mostly stream video from Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBO Now, and the like, and get your music from Apple Music, Spotify, or another streaming service, then you don't have to worry so much about local storage and can get away with 64 GB or maybe even 16 GB.

Apps and Games

The current size limit for App Store apps is 4 GB. That's nowhere near typical, however, and even big games aren't often over 2 GB in size. Still, that can add up for app addicts. New to iOS 9, though, is App Thinning, which makes sure you only get the assets need to run the app on your iPhone, not someone else's iPad, Also, you only get resources like levels, video tutorials or cut scenes, document templates, accessory packs, etc. when and as you need them, so you're not storing anything you're not using.

It's all designed to make the most of your storage so, if you choose to go lower, you can stay there more comfortably.

Who should get 16 GB?

Most regular buyers shouldn't get the 16 GB iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus. If you're buying hundreds or thousands for education or enterprise and only need them to access B2B apps and web portals, that's one thing. If you have an iPad for big gaming, don't shoot a lot of photos or videos, text rather than picture messages, and stream your videos and music rather than storing, you might be okay with 16 GB.

However, 4x the storage is only $100 more and unless you absolutely can't or don't want to pay a dime more, you'll be much happier with 64 GB.

Who should get 64GB?

For most people, 64GB will be plenty of space and then some. You can store thousands of songs, lots of apps, a decent amount of photos and video, and still feel like you can breathe. Thanks to iCloud Photo Library, iCloud Music Library, and App Thinning, you'll get more out of it than every before.

If you're planning on using your iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus as your primary means of consuming media content, or as your primary camera and video recorder, the 64GB model will serve you well for a long time to come.

Who should get 128GB?

If you really do want your iPhone to do everything, all of the time, and never (or rarely) have to worry about running out of space or going to the cloud, if you want to shoot a ton of 12 mp photos and 4K video without having to offload it, or if you simply want to make sure you're future proofed well into the future, then you've probably already decided on the 128 GB iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus, haven't you?

Still undecided?

If you're still not sure about 16GB, 64GB, or 128GB, jump into our iPhone forums and the best community in mobile will happily help you out!

Also, remember, in most places you'll have time to try out your new iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus and return it if you don't like it. So, make sure, as soon as possible, you put your new iPhone through realistic paces. Load up all the apps and games you want with you, load up your movies and TV shows, go out and take some photos and shoot some video. Give it a complete and thorough workout. If it feels like you got too much storage, say 64GB and you haven't even gone past 2GB, or if you got too little, say you're already at 12GB of 16GB, then take your iPhone back and exchange it for one that better suits your needs.

Georgia Dow and Ally Kazmucha contributed to previous versions of this article.
