Opera Passes One Million Downloads in First Day

It seems that iPhone and iPod Touch users can't wait to download an alternative to
Safari.Opera Mini, a version of the Opera browser for iPhone and iPod Touch, was downloaded more than a million times in its first day of availability, Opera Software ASA announced Thursday.Additionally, the company said the browser was "the number one iPhone app in the in the 22 featured Apple App Stores on their site" at 8 a.m. Central European Time April 15."Today iPhone users have a choice, and, as the numbers show, they are eager to explore new and faster ways to surf the Web on the iPhone - especially during heavy Web traffic,"  Lars Boilesen, CEO of Opera Software, said in the announcement.Opera's publishers say it uses only a tenth of the bandwidth of other browsers, compressing web pages by up to 90 percent. That could be a factor in why so many people are giving it a try. For iPhone users who complain about slow or nonexistent 3G connections, compressing web pages may provide a time-saving alternative.Opera announced in February that it was working on a version of the browser for the iPhone and iPod Touch. It submitted the browser for approval in March, and had the app approved in April.Opera also offers a version of its browser for Mac OS X, as well as for Windows and Linux.
