Apple gears up to launch retail stores in IndiaApple has a strong retail presence in India through franchisee-owned stores, but the manufacturer has signified its intentions to launch the Apple Retail Store in the country. The company's looking to do just that, as it has filed an application with India's Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion to open retail stores and sell products directly through its website in the country. Speaking to ET Tech, DIPP Secretary Amitabh Kant said, "We have just received Apple's proposal. We are examining it." Government regulations — which require foreign brands to source 30 percent of materials from within the country — have prohibited Apple from setting up shop, but the mandatory local procurement norms were relaxed in November. The government has also changed its stance on letting single-brand retailers sell products online.
