iPad Knockoffs Made in China

Bootleg versions of the iPad running Windows are available in China, according to a Reuters report. One knock-off cited in the article looks almost like a giant iPhone. It has a home button and three USB ports, but sports a Windows desktop. It was found in an electronics mall in Shenzhen, near Hong Kong. It sells for about 20 percent less than the cheapest iPad's suggested price.Additionally, the Chinese e-commerce site Taobao has hundreds of listings for the iPad, but many of them are obviously fake, the report said.Though the iPad is still not available internationally, that apparently hasn't stopped Chinese resellers from selling fake iPads. Those are also manufactured in China, the report said.Though China has developed a reputation as a haven for pirates and fake goods, genuine iPads have also been available in China. As previously reported on Mac|Life, at least one retailer imported iPads bought in America and sold them at a markup in Hong Kong, which is part of China. We think the importer has the right idea by sticking with the real thing. Imitating an iPad by making a tablet that runs Windows sounds an awful lot like what HP is trying to do with its forthcoming Slate computer. And what's the point of that, really?
