Apple’s latest hire could mean more ads are coming to TV+

<p>An ad-supported Apple TV+ tier is starting to look all but inevitable. According to <a data-i13n="cpos:1;pos:1;elm:affiliate_link;sellerN:The Information;elmt:;" href="https://shopping.yahoo.com/rdlw?merchantId=ba0a4cdc-cec8-416a-9e93-e11b8179129c&amp;siteId=us-engadget&amp;pageId=1p-autolink&amp;featureId=text-link&amp;merchantName=The+Information&amp;custData=eyJzb3VyY2VOYW1lIjoiV2ViLURlc2t0b3AtVmVyaXpvbiIsInN0b3JlSWQiOiJiYTBhNGNkYy1jZWM4LTQxNmEtOWU5My1lMTFiODE3OTEyOWMiLCJsYW5kaW5nVXJsIjoiaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cudGhlaW5mb3JtYXRpb24uY29tL2FydGljbGVzL2FwcGxlLWhpcmVzLWFkLWV4ZWN1dGl2ZS1mb3ItYXBwbGUtdHYtYS1zaWduLW9mLWFwcGxlcy12aWRlby1hZC1hbWJpdGlvbnM_cmM9d2hmMGZkIiwiY29udGVudFV1aWQiOiIwYmUxZDJhOC1iYzgzLTQzZjItODFmMS1iMTFhZGQ0ZGMyM2YifQ&amp;signature=AQAAAfK2UFoRB8LWRBvEyUoWMzJl8gGwJWlbFc4q1vTsRhvD&amp;gcReferrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theinformation.com%2Farticles%2Fapple-hires-ad-executive-for-apple-tv-a-sign-of-apples-video-ad-ambitions%3Frc%3Dwhf0fd">The Information, Apple recently hired Lauren Fry, a former ad tech executive, “to help build a video advertising business” for its streaming service. Before her most recent stint at digital advertising firm <a data-i13n="cpos:2;pos:1" href="https://www.simulmedia.com/">Simulmedia, Fry held ad sales roles at AT&amp;T and Comcast.&nbsp;</p><p>Bringing more ads to Apple TV+ would fall in line with some of Apple’s more recent actions. Toward the end of last year, the company began <a data-i13n="cpos:3;pos:1" href="https://www.engadget.com/apple-app-store-today-tab-ads-152249659.html">displaying additional ads within the App Store, a move that could be a precursor to <a data-i13n="cpos:4;pos:1" href="https://www.engadget.com/ads-apple-maps-2023-211033899.html">search ads appearing in Apple Maps and other first-party software. It’s worth noting before Fry’s hiring, Apple was already showing ads alongside <a data-i13n="cpos:5;pos:1" href="https://www.engadget.com/apple-tv-plus-friday-night-baseball-181930932.html">Major League Baseball games. In November, Bloomberg also reported Apple was building a live tv ad network to support its <a data-i13n="cpos:6;pos:1" href="https://www.engadget.com/apple-tv-mls-soccer-streaming-subscription-service-171000757.html">10-year deal with Major League Soccer. As The Information points out, an ad-supported tier would be the most straightforward way for Apple to bring more ads to TV+. A handful of other streaming platforms, including <a data-i13n="cpos:7;pos:1" href="https://www.engadget.com/netflix-basic-with-ads-explainer-190555318.html">Netflix and <a data-i13n="cpos:8;pos:1" href="https://www.engadget.com/disney-plus-ad-supported-tier-2022-143555459.html">Disney+, already offer such tiers to customers as they’re an easy way for those services to broaden their subscriber base.</p><span id="end-legacy-contents"></span>
