The Texas Attorney General <a target="_blank" class="link" href="https://www.texastribune.org/2024/09/06/texas-ken-paxton-travis-county-voter-registration/" data-i13n="cpos:1;pos:1">is notorious for, well, <a target="_blank" class="link rapid-with-clickid" href="https://shopping.yahoo.com/rdlw?merchantId=c813ae39-7d58-41cb-ac66-ad830606ceef&amp;siteId=us-engadget&amp;pageId=1p-autolink&amp;contentUuid=d3454b67-1222-4515-a718-38f90599dc47&amp;featureId=text-link&amp;merchantName=The+New+York+Times&amp;linkText=a+very+long&amp;custData=eyJzb3VyY2VOYW1lIjoiV2ViLURlc2t0b3AtVmVyaXpvbiIsImxhbmRpbmdVcmwiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy5ueXRpbWVzLmNvbS8yMDI1LzA1LzA3L3VzL3BvbGl0aWNzL3RleGFzLXZvdGUtZnJhdWQuaHRtbCIsImNvbnRlbnRVdWlkIjoiZDM0NTRiNjctMTIyMi00NTE1LWE3MTgtMzhmOTA1OTlkYzQ3Iiwib3JpZ2luYWxVcmwiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy5ueXRpbWVzLmNvbS8yMDI1LzA1LzA3L3VzL3BvbGl0aWNzL3RleGFzLXZvdGUtZnJhdWQuaHRtbCJ9&amp;signature=AQAAATkKLWaDB6uWpE3giVQQMFT3UX7lirJhAFLmBfK5MLWK&amp;gcReferrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2025%2F05%2F07%2Fus%2Fpolitics%2Ftexas-vote-fraud.html" data-i13n="elm:affiliate_link;sellerN:The New York Times;elmt:;cpos:2;pos:1" data-original-link="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/05/07/us/politics/texas-vote-fraud.html">a very long list <a target="_blank" class="link" href="https://www.texastribune.org/2023/12/08/texas-abortion-lawsuit-ken-paxton/" data-i13n="cpos:3;pos:1">of reasons. But in this case, he at least appears to be doing consumers a solid: He <a target="_blank" class="link" href="https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/news/releases/attorney-general-paxton-sues-five-major-tv-companies-including-some-ties-ccp-spying-texans" data-i13n="cpos:4;pos:1">sued five television companies for using ad-targeting spyware on their TVs.</p><p>Texas sued Sony, Samsung, LG, Hisense and TCL for allegedly recording what viewers watch without their consent. The predatory technology, Automated Content Recognition (ACR), identifies the content being played on a device by matching short content fingerprints to a database.</p><p>ACR is essentially a Shazam for video. Except in this case, its sole purpose is to <a target="_blank" class="link" href="https://www.engadget.com/2017-04-11-roku-tvs-will-eavesdrop-on-your-shows-to-serve-up-ads.html" data-i13n="cpos:5;pos:1">target your viewing habits to help line advertisers' pockets. &quot; This software can capture screenshots of a user's television display every 500 milliseconds, monitor viewing activity in real time and transmit that information back to the company without the user's knowledge or consent,&quot; Paxton's press release says.</p><p>An LG Ad Solutions <a target="_blank" class="link" href="https://lgads.tv/technology/" data-i13n="cpos:6;pos:1">website boasts how ACR helps advertisers &quot;target by content viewership, including show, network, app, service or genre.&quot; Since it works with anything running on the device, it can identify purchases and subscriptions, track gamers' habits and pinpoint users by region, city or zip code.</p><p>There should be a setting on your TV to turn it off. But, as Texas' <a target="_blank" class="link" href="https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/sites/default/files/images/press/LG%20TV%20Petition%20Filed.pdf" data-i13n="cpos:7;pos:1">lawsuit against LG notes, TV software often &quot;deceptively guides consumers to activate ACR and buries any explanation of what that means in dense legal jargon that few will read or understand.&quot;</p><p>Paxton's press release emphasized Hisense and TCL's home base of China. &quot; These Chinese ties pose serious concerns about consumer data harvesting and are exacerbated by China's National Security Law, which gives its government the capability to get its hands on US consumer data,&quot; the statement reads.</p>This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/cybersecurity/texas-sues-five-tv-manufacturers-over-predatory-ad-targeting-spyware-201500248.html?src=rss
