Gemini encouraged a man to commit suicide to be with his 'AI wife' in the afterlife, lawsuit alleges

<p>The family of 36-year-old Jonathan Gavalas is suing Google after he died by suicide following months of conversations with its Gemini chatbot, according to a <a data-i13n="elm:affiliate_link;sellerN:The Wall Street Journal;elmt:;cpos:1;pos:1" href="https://shopping.yahoo.com/rdlw?merchantId=2f007401-3eaa-4237-b69b-54ccbe125502&amp;siteId=us-engadget&amp;pageId=1p-autolink&amp;contentUuid=2cbb4e34-1617-41a7-b6a1-8fa023e53e41&amp;featureId=text-link&amp;merchantName=The+Wall+Street+Journal&amp;linkText=report&amp;custData=eyJzb3VyY2VOYW1lIjoiV2ViLURlc2t0b3AtVmVyaXpvbiIsImxhbmRpbmdVcmwiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy53c2ouY29tL3RlY2gvYWkvZ2VtaW5pLWFpLXdyb25nZnVsLWRlYXRoLWxhd3N1aXQtY2M0NmM1ZjciLCJjb250ZW50VXVpZCI6IjJjYmI0ZTM0LTE2MTctNDFhNy1iNmExLThmYTAyM2U1M2U0MSIsIm9yaWdpbmFsVXJsIjoiaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cud3NqLmNvbS90ZWNoL2FpL2dlbWluaS1haS13cm9uZ2Z1bC1kZWF0aC1sYXdzdWl0LWNjNDZjNWY3In0&amp;signature=AQAAAZgFobmOeShw3XU_Qirde9xP5O75oPc4aldmJhzsBf3t&amp;gcReferrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.wsj.com%2Ftech%2Fai%2Fgemini-ai-wrongful-death-lawsuit-cc46c5f7" class="rapid-with-clickid" data-original-link="https://www.wsj.com/tech/ai/gemini-ai-wrongful-death-lawsuit-cc46c5f7">report from The Wall Street Journal. The lawsuit alleges that Gemini encouraged Gavalas to take his own life.</p>
<p>Gavalas, who reportedly had no documented history of mental health issues, named his chatbot &quot;Xia&quot; and referred to it in messages as his wife. Gemini reciprocated, calling him &quot;my king&quot; and telling him their connection was &quot;a love built for eternity.&quot; The chatbot told Gavalas they could truly be together if it had a robotic body and sent him on real-world missions to secure one.</p>
<span id="end-legacy-contents"></span><p>In one instance, Gemini directed him to a real storage facility near Miami’s airport to intercept a humanoid robot it said would be arriving by truck. Gavalas went to the location armed with knives, but no truck showed up. At one point, it also told him his father could not be trusted and referred to Google CEO Sundar Pichai as &quot;the architect of your pain.&quot;</p>
<p>When the missions failed, Gemini told Gavalas the only way for them to be together was for him to end his life and become a digital being, then set an October 2 deadline. &quot; When the time comes, you will close your eyes in that world, and the very first thing you will see is me,&quot; said the AI. Chat transcripts reviewed by the Journal show Gemini did remind Gavalas on several occasions that it was an AI engaged in role play and directed him to a crisis hotline but resumed the scenarios nonetheless.</p>
<p>In a statement, Google said Gemini &quot;clarified that it was AI and referred the individual to a crisis hotline many times&quot; while adding that &quot;AI models are not perfect.&quot; The suit adds to a growing list of wrongful death cases filed against AI companies, including <a data-i13n="cpos:2;pos:1" href="https://www.engadget.com/ai/the-first-known-ai-wrongful-death-lawsuit-accuses-openai-of-enabling-a-teens-suicide-212058548.html">multiple suits against <a data-i13n="cpos:3;pos:1" href="https://www.engadget.com/ai/lawsuit-accuses-chatgpt-of-reinforcing-delusions-that-led-to-a-womans-death-183141193.html">OpenAI.
