WWDC: Safari Extensions, “Little Room for Surpise,” Says One Analyst

(Image courtesy of 9to5Mac)Google’s Chrome browser is out of beta with its first “stable” release this week -- not only nipping at Safari’s heels, but literally crawling up its legs.9to5Mac is reporting that Google Chrome’s market share has grown from just two percent to 6.7 percent in the past year, while Apple’s Safari “has made only modest gains” from 4.07 percent to 4.7 percent. Surely Apple won’t take this new challenge lying down, especially with Google’s announcement this week that the Chrome browser is officially out of beta.Thrown into the mix is a comment by Daring Fireball’s John Gruber. In discussing the new Google Chrome release, he remarks, “The other big thing that’s missing (compared to both Chrome and Firefox) is a proper extension API. If only Apple had an imminent developer conference where they could unveil such a thing.”Certainly sounds like Gruber might know a thing or two that we don’t, although Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster announced on Wednesday morning that Apple has “little room for surprise” when this year’s WWDC kicks off on June 7 with a keynote by CEO Steve Jobs, according to AppleInsider."The Mac OS has not seen the same level of innovation as iPhone software in recent years," Munster elaborated. "With the next version of Mac OS X, we expect Apple to bring some of the same innovation to the Mac platform. Multi-touch technology, for example could be a key feature of Mac OS 10.7."Bottom line: WWDC will likely be in-line with expectations, and a non-event for the stock," Munster concludes, "but the new iPhone will likely drive unit sales beyond Street expectations, providing a positive catalyst for shares of AAPL in the coming months."
